Default Starcraft?

Just wondering -- What is "Starcraft"? I've heard of it plenty of times on these forums and decided to check some videos on Youtube, and it looks like some RTS game.

Lol. You don't know what's Starcraft? It's like not knowing Diablo, Might and Magic or Half Life. It was like the best (and some of it's aspects are still) RTS game in the history of video games.

And I was ashamed that I didn't play it...

At least you didn't ask "What is Doom?", because then my head really would have exploded.

Consider the thread won.

Anyway, just in case you hadn't checked, a Wikipedia article. It's the RTS game that defined RTS. Three races that fight with their own unique abilities and units, and to this day is essentially more important in Korea than football. Easily the most balanced game of all time, except for maybe Pong.

Oh yeah, and "ZOMG its t3h BEST RTS game evar!!1!one!!!1!"

That is true and one of the main reasons is that Koreans are very efficient and particular about competitions involving pure skill. That is why GW had a very high Korean base when it started.

They even 'measure' starcraft skills in APM(actions per minute) and win % . Some koreans have pretty absurd APM numbers in starcraft.

Some games dont rely on their graphics to be good Besides, you have to keep in mind that it is a game from 1998 , and people still play it

I dont play it either, but at least I got respect for it

It's a popular RTS game made by Blizzard Entertainment.

May I also suggest an RTS game? The Battle For Middle Earth 2 and it's expansion are based on Lord of the Rings and are EXCELLENT RTS games.

Yeah, but Starcraft is 5th best selling computer game ever, behind Sims, Lineage, Sims 2 and WoW.

And, of course, the best selling RTS of all time.

Not much of a selling success, though. Not even 1 million was sold.

Well, there would be RTS'. But Starcraft has set the expectations a lot higher.

I should punch you, Tyla, but you're younger than me, so I'll let it slide this time. You should pick it up though. It's fun, with a good story. And you can get it pretty cheaply, about 20 USD.

Starcraft is still considered to be the RTS by many people (like all of Korea). As was stated, it set the bar for most RTSs that came after 1998.

And come on, the graphics weren't that bad. Better that Diablo.

Most foreign competitive players do this as well, using various programs to track it. It's not necessary and quite a few don't, since it really shouldn't be too much of a focus. Non-Korean APM is usually lower by comparison, simply because not even the top players are training at the same intensity.

APM among pro's varies immensely and isn't linked to success. Kang Min and Ma Jae Yoon had APM near or below 200, while Lee Jae Dong and Lee Yun Yeol often average above 400. It's not an effective measurement as some players spam more than others, inflating APM. There's another tally known as EAPM (effective APM) that tries to take spam into account, but that's not a purely objective scale.

Then again, when it's your full-time job and you train over twelve hours a day, you're going to get results. That's why Korea wins WCG (which isn't very competitive compared to StarLeagues anyway). Obviously you're going to keep track of your win % (KeSPA tracks the wins of televised games) in that position, because it helps determine your position on the team (and salary), among other things.

None of this is too relevant anyways but I'm bored and follow the scene a bit so why not.
